"I had to do something"

Ryland Whittington was just 2 years old when he began to show signs of being transgender. By the time he was 5, those signs were only getting stronger.

For years, Ryland's parents struggled with fear and uncertainty about what being transgender would mean for Ryland and their family before finally coming to terms with his transition.

His father Jeff wants people to know that they didn't make a rash decision. "[I]t came with a lot of pain, anguish, research over the course of years" (Winkley, 2016).

Ultimately, it was seeing how their acceptance affected Ryland that convinced his parents that they had made the right decision. "[H]e changed overnight. He was happy" (Winkley, 2016).
