Experiences, Challenges and Hopes

Issues relating to gender identity have come to the foreground in recent years, with transgender and nonbinary persons often finding themselves at the center of public debate. Sometimes the voices of transgender and nonbinary persons themselves get lost in all the heated arguments.

To better understand the experiences and perspectives of transgender and nonbinary persons, the Pew Research Center held a series of focus groups with individuals ranging in age from the late teens to 50s and 60s. As they talked, the groups explored a range of issues from individual gender journeys to what it's like to navigate day-to-day life, experiences with the medical establishment and the most pressing issues facing transgender and nonbinary persons in the U.S. today.
