The devastating consequences of discrimination
Bullying has been linked to an heightened risk for suicide among LGBTQ+ youth, with LGBTQ+ young people being more than 4 times more likely to attempt suicide than their straight and cisgender peers (The Trevor Project, 2021).
Researchers at The Trevor Project put the risks facing LGBTQ+ young people in stark terms: "Negative treatment by others, such as bullying , is a strong and consistent risk factor for youth suicide, and LGBTQ youth experience bullying at significantly greater rates than their straight and cisgender peers" (The Trevor Project, 2021).
Just how prevalent is bullying of LGBTQ+ youth? When surveyed, a majority of LGBTQ+ teens in middle and high school report having been bullied in person or online in the past year (The Trevor Project, 2021).
